Pet Wellness

For a healthy adult pet, we recommend a visit to our clinic

BI-ANNUALLY.

Since pets age at a much quicker rate than humans, these visits will become increasingly important in early detection of any changes in their health.

We stress the importance of physical examinations on a regular basis as the core of preventative healthcare. Biannual examinations are recommended to monitor changes or detect new problems or risk factors for your pet. Remember that it is important for your pet to have an examination, even if he/she is not ill or due for any vaccinations.

Age-Related Wellness Programs

At Best Friends Animal Hospital, we can keep your pets happy and healthy by utilizing the following:

The physical exam is a very important aspect of your pet’s wellness. During this exam, the doctor evaluates the entire pet, which includes:

  • An eye exam using an ophthalmoscope
  • An ear exam using an otoscope
  • A heart exam using a stethoscope
  • Other points evaluated include teeth, skin, coat, vital signs, body condition, and joints. Doctors also use their hands to palpate the abdominal contents.

On average, veterinary physical exams discover three additional health concerns than what is known by the pet owner.

Although a comprehensive exam is imperative, it may not tell the whole story. Monitoring lab parameters, such as blood analysis and urinalysis each year, alerts us of potentially threatening trends of the internal organs and helps identify internal disease at the earliest stage possible.

Another important aspect of wellness care during the examination process is educating clients. Together as partners, we can ensure that your pets receive all they need to live long and healthy lives.

Feel free to ask us any questions. And of course, we take it upon ourselves to keep you in the know.

We also offer annual blood screenings for all of our patients. If done routinely, these screenings will help our doctors detect potential diseases before they become a serious issue. If caught early, many common diseases can be managed through dietary modifications. Since pets usually don’t exhibit symptoms of many serious diseases, such as kidney or liver disease, until the disease is in its advanced stages, early detection leads to early treatment and can prolong your pet’s life.

We stock many of the pharmaceuticals your pet may need. This includes heartworm preventative, flea and tick products, supplements, commonly prescribed medications, prescription food and shampoos. You may access our refill request form online and receive an email when it is ready to be picked up.

However, our affiliation with VetSource allows us to expand our inventory with products that ARE guaranteed by the manufacturer unlike other online companies. The manufacturer’s guarantee is very important. For example, many heartworm products are backed by a guarantee that they will prevent heartworm and certain intestinal parasites. If an animal is diagnosed with parasites while on their product, companies will pay for the treatment.

If these products are obtained through unlicensed internet pharmacies the companies will not stand behind the product guarantee. Treatment can be costly and using products obtained through these pharmacies may mean more frequent heartworm and fecal sample testing for your pet.

VetSource allows us more options for medicating your pet including a compounding pharmacy or other special needs like allergies. Many medications can be produced as liquids or soft treats in a variety of flavors. VetSource is an easy online option for you and your pet with shipping to your home. Internet Pharmacy Policy:

Some Internet sites have been prosecuted for selling medications not approved by the FDA. There have also been concerns regarding improper storage of vaccines and medications at temperatures which could damage the products.

Our internet pharmacy policy insures that you receive only the correct, quality-assured medication that we have prescribed for your pet. Due to the hazards associated with improper manufacturing and storage of pharmaceuticals and the lack of a guarantee, we cannot fax or call in any prescriptions to online pharmacies. We will provide you with a written prescription when necessary or you can order through our online portal where we know the products are guaranteed.

In establishing this policy, our goal is to make it convenient, safe and economical to obtain your pet’s medication and to safeguard your pet’s health from the purchase of substandard products. We work with several legitimate pharmacies to provide the necessary medications.

We strongly encourage basic obedience training for all dogs whether they are young or newly acquired adults. We provide guidance and basic educational information about behavioral problems and training. However, for more involved concerns, we will be happy to provide information about local behaviorists and trainers.

We offer a variety of unique pet products. The toys, leashes, collars and id tags have been “Zurich tested”. Some of his favorites include Kitty Hoots toys and Elmo’s Closet collars and leashes.
These items as well as shampoos, conditioners, supplements, dental care products and treats can be found in our waiting area.
